Dental Oatlands
Orthodontic Braces have been a pert of dental care for many decades. They are very effective for correcting teeth and jaw alignment problems.
Braces consist of metal brackets affixed to individual teeth, connected by a horizontal wire. These exert constant pressure on the teeth, which steadily move the teeth into an ideal alignment. Once the teeth are ideally aligned they are kept in place with a retainer. In some cases the retainer must be worn every night for the rest of the patient’s life. More often it need only be worn for a few years after the braces come off.
Braces are fitted for both aesthetic and functional benefits. Certainly the straight teeth look better. But they are also easier to clean, and are far less likely to suffer uneven wear, and the properly aligned jaws are less likely to develop issues.
Ceramic Braces – Dental Oatlands
Ceramic braces are colour matched to the individual’s teeth, so they are less noticeable than metal braces. They are not as robust as some braces systems, so they will not be appropriate for some types of orthodontic treatment. But for many moderate orthodontic problems they are a good option.
Lingual Braces
Lingual Braces are fitted over the back of teeth rather than the front. This makes them almost impossible to see, being hidden behind the teeth themselves.
These lingual braces are more difficult to fit and adjust by the dentist, but otherwise they are just as effective as other braces for most tooth alignment situations. They may not be ideal for jaw alignment issues.
Having braces behind the teeth can make speaking and eating difficult, but this is true to a lesser extent of all braces. The individual soon learns to adapt to the situation.
Invisalign Ermington
Invisalign is an alternative to braces used by some adults. This treatment consists of a series of clear plastic retainers that use pressure to align the teeth. They are effective for many minor or moderate tooth alignment situations, but they cannot provide some of the more extreme alignment correction of braces, so they are not suitable for all situations, and cannot correct jaw alignment issues.
Wisdom Teeth Rydalmere
Wisdom teeth are the back molars that emerge in our late teens or early twenties. As such, they often appear after the brace have been removed. Unfortunately, there is a danger than the new wisdom teeth will push the other teeth out of alignment, ruing the work of the braces. Often there is not enough space in the mouth for these additional teeth.
If you have wisdom teeth emerging you should have them checked by the dentist, before they cause any damage or ongoing pain.
